URM 50th Anniversary Success

The Museum's "Return to Turnwold" April tours were an outstanding success, with each tour being completely sold out. More than 150 guests took advantage of the unique opportunity to visit the 203 year old plantation home and grounds as part of the Museum's 50th anniversary celebration.

Historian, Jim Marshall, president of the Eatonton-Putnam Historical Society and URM Board member, conducted a pre-tour briefing on Turnwold, its owner Joseph Addison Turner, and their strong connection to local author Joel Chandler Harris. Marshall, in addressing the tours, stated that current owners of the site had gifted the visitors "with a rare opportunity to visit" the grounds and home where the young Harris lived while learning the printing trade under Turner's tutelage and where he first heard the critter tales.
Proceeds from the tour will be used to benefit projects of the Uncle Remus Museum.
