Joel Chandler Harris
Who knew a boy born in Eatonton, GA December 9th 1845 would go on to become one of America's finest writers. From a young age Joel was surrounded by literature and gained experience while working as a printer's devil at Turnwold Plantation in East Eatonton. During Joel's time at Turnwold he experienced the stories and language of the plantation's slaves. It was these experiences that would shape Joel's famous Uncle Remus stories.
“He [Joseph Addison Turner] took an abiding interest in my welfare, gave me good advice, directed my reading and gave me the benefit of his wisdom and experience at every turn and all occasions.”
